Holy writer's shock, Batman! Did I see correctly that HarperCollins is shutting down Authonomy...after 8 years??

Kally (I believe) and I joined it at its beginning. I got annoyed at all the book licking you had to do to get votes and decided I wasn't going to do that anymore. And no, that isn't a typo. But shutting it down altogether?

Authonomy was a good idea in theory. Unfortunately, I think it corrupted quickly. People swapped reviews - good ones for good ones, no matter the quality - and while a decent story or two rose to the top, I think a majority of them were people who caged the system and manipulated their way up (not that Gilded Shadows was any good when I posted there. It needed an insane amount of work).

I got some valuable advice there, for sure, but dangling that "publishing" carrot did more harm than good. At least for me. I couldn't spend all day reading & reviewing others' work, not when I had a 40-hour/week job plus my own writing to work at. Maybe I'm just cynical (it happens, lol) but Authonomy left a bad taste in my mouth very early on.

And there's still Scribophile. I think their system works a lot better.
